The Grand Cayman blue iguanas live in a variety of habitats on the island, including dry forests, rocky outcrops, and scrublands. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plants and fruits such as hibiscus, mangoes, and cactus. These iguanas are also known to be excellent swimmers, and can often be found basking in the sun on the rocky shorelines of the island.

Unfortunately, the population of Grand Cayman blue iguanas has drastically declined over the years due to a number of factors. In the 1990s, it was estimated that there were only around 25 Grand Cayman blue iguanas left in the wild, making them one of the most endangered species in the world. However, thanks to conservation efforts, their numbers have increased to around 1,000 individuals today. The Blue Iguana Recovery Program, established in 1990, has played a crucial role in the recovery of this species. This program focuses on breeding and releasing iguanas into the wild, as well as educating the public about the importance of protecting these animals and their habitats.

In addition to conservation efforts, the Grand Cayman blue iguana has also been protected by law. In 2003, the species was listed as critically endangered under the US Endangered Species Act, and in 2013, it was listed as endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. These protections have helped to reduce poaching and illegal trade of these rare and beautiful creatures.
